My Father attended the Wesleyan School for Boys in Oxford during the 1920s. One of his teachers was a certain Mr Slee, from Devon whose nickname was “Monkey”. Mr Slee would always sing this song at events such as prizegiving, indeed my Father always remembered the opening of the last verse.Jeremy Beer-Brownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807018700599489326.post-38107814306208369912021-05-14T18:45:08.376+01:002021-05-14T18:45:08.376+01:00Thanks for that!

I was enthusiastic as my mother was a Devonshire lass though the school was in northwest London. I can't remember when I last heard it but memories came flooding back when, listening to Radio 3 this morning (23.9.18), Peter Dawson's rendition came over. That it was nearly ninety years ago was evident but, nonetheless, stirring.
Agree with others: an up-to-date recording is well overdue.

Ian Stuart
23rd September 2018Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16762833187887604483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807018700599489326.post-11471940428596879082017-03-08T11:50:04.310+00:002017-03-08T11:50:04.310+00:00Our ladies choir, based in Barnstaple, North Devon...Our ladies choir, based in Barnstaple, North Devon have just started learning a three part arrangement of this and will be including it in our repertoire in the very near future. Our Devonshire music teacher made sure we emphasised the Cornwall especially for our Cornish teacher Mr Trevarrow! I wish it were more widely known - perhaps Gareth Malone should do county choirs next and include this beautiful song.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807018700599489326.post-26857583940155559412013-02-17T05:37:05.145+00:002013-02-17T05:37:05.145+00:00We've named our new-bord son Devon, and we hav...We've named our new-bord son Devon, and we have had lots of people sing this tune when they learn of his name. I still love it and remember most of the words. We visited Devon last year, and whenever we met residents there, I would ask them if they knew of the song. Not one of them had ever heard of it. I was very disappointed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807018700599489326.post-75248648001433124002012-03-31T07:33:21.224+01:002012-03-31T07:33:21.224+01:00Andrew

When I returned to Devon 16 years ago I introduced the tradition to my own young family. Whilst my mother knew all the words, I sadly never wrote them down whilst she was still alive. It's wonderful now to see the complete version and even better to hear the original recording ! Thank you very much.

Andrew KewellAndrew Marcus Kewellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04970815924399624357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807018700599489326.post-23976427311340308892011-05-16T18:25:29.638+01:002011-05-16T18:25:29.638+01:00I'm surprised that Frederick Harvey's vers...I'm surprised that Frederick Harvey's version of 'Glorious Devon' hasn't been mentioned. It's my particular favourite. I'll be posting it on youtube in the very near future (there is a version on there but it's taken from a very scratched EP), accompanied by images of glorious Devon.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
